Mutual Respect & Care — The Foundation of Trust

A Lesson from the Ramayana on Respect, Responsibility, and Leadership

🙏🏻 Mutual Respect & Care

As Sita wailed & lamented on her way, she saw Jatayu resting on a tree. Although in cruel grasp of Rāvan, still courageously she exclaimed:

“True friend of Rām, behold this miserable sinner carrying me away by force. Don’t resist him as he’s armed to teeth & is a treacherous master of illusion. I beg you to acquaint Rām & Laxman in full what has befallen me.”

Jatayu, hearing these words, awoke with a start & saw Rāvan taking away Sita in an airborne chariot. Jatayu was huge as a mountain peak; his sharp beak & sharper talons were his only weapons.

From his lofty perch, he cried:

“Dasamukha, Supreme Lord Rām is my stay & refuge and I’m his humble servant. He is son of King Dasrath & is Lord of myriad worlds, so he is your King also.”

“Sita, his beloved wife, also follows the same Dharma. If you don’t acknowledge Rām as your master & count him as any man, yet you act in defiance of all Dharma. You yourself being a mighty King, entrusted with law & order & well-being of others, how can you even dream of outraging the wives of others? In fact, it’s your duty to protect wives of other kings like yourself.”

The Game of Life Reflection

Sita, through her words, showed care & respect towards Jatayu. Even in her moment of greatest distress, she thought of his safety and well-being.

Jatayu, in turn, responded with unwavering loyalty, courage, and wisdom. Before taking up arms, he first appealed to Rāvan’s conscience, duty, and sense of Dharma.

Mutual respect and a shared sense of responsibility create the foundation upon which trust is built.
