Our culture, traditions, and festivals have a deeper meaning. According to the Art of Living, all of these are associated with a specific divine energy. This divine energy is given a name and form for us to understand the virtues, qualities, and its blessings clearly. One among these energies, and the presiding energy, is Shiva.

Mahashivratri is one of the Hindu festivals that is celebrated across many places in India, in honour of God Shiva. On this day, people observe a fast, meditate and pray to God Shiva by chanting various mantras including Sri Rudram. People visit temples nearby and in many temples it is possible to offer a puja to the deity with one’s own hands.

Many temple cities organise dance festivals during this time as it is popularly believed that Shiva is Lord of Dance. A reference to the festival can be found in the Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana.

Indian thought and practices over time immemorial have commemorated certain days and festivals as ways and means for people to understand, remember and reunite with the Universe and the divinities of the Universe. These festivals become gateways for people to reach out and be in communion with the divinities.

Shivaratri is one such festival which is a gateway to reach out and understand the divinity called Shiva or Shiva Tattva.

Once we understand the meaning of Shiva Tattva and the celebration of Shivaratri, no doubt, our celebrations and the enjoyment of the Tattva of Shiva will be enhanced manifold. It will make our celebrations more relevant and meaningful.

On the auspicious occasion of MahaShivaRatri, please watch this BharathGyan documentary film on the significance of ShivaRatri. Why do we celebrate it at night? What does Shiva mean? Celebrate Change.
