According to the Hindu Calendar there are 12 Sankrantis in a year and the Makara Sankranti that comes in the month of January is the most significant and is celebrated across India with  different names. In many parts of the country, this festival is celebrated for 3 to 4 days. Celebrated in the honour of the Sun God, Surya, it also heralds the arrival of the spring season and the end of the winter season. It is also celebrated as the Harvest season. Special food items are prepared and distributed amongst family and friends. Kite flying is one of the popular games played in some states during this festival. This festival day is considered very auspicious to make charitable contributions.
